(CNN) – Jackie Umuhoza was coming out of a beauty salon in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, in late November when she was grabbed by five men and bundled into a van, her family says.
Frantic friends and family raised the alarm on social media and discovered that Rwanda’s security forces had detained her on charges of treason and espionage, offenses that carry sentences of up to 25 years imprisonment, according to Amnesty International, which has called for her immediate release.
Rwanda’s Investigation Bureau, through its official social media account, confirmed that she had been detained.
Despite the charges, Umuhoza has still so far not appeared before a court.
Umuhoza, 25, is one of many people perceived as opponents of President Paul Kagame’s government who have been abducted or disappeared.
